I pay for SEO every month. Why doesn't AI mention my Scottsdale med spa?

The Aesthetic Shortlist · Updated September 26, 2026

A med spa treatment room with a reclining chair, a side cart and daylight through tall windows.

The SEO invoice arrives on the first of the month with a ranking report that looks fine, and yet the names ChatGPT gave most often for Botox in Scottsdale were The Flawless Lab, ZONA Med Spa and Moderne Medical Aesthetics. Ranking a page and being named in an AI answer are different outcomes, and Microsoft states that SEO does not guarantee citations in AI experiences. In 234 AI answers about Scottsdale med spas, measured September 16, 2026, the assistants cited yelp.com, medspascout.com, realself.com and practices' own websites, so the useful questions for an SEO provider are about crawler access and treatment pages.

My SEO report says my Scottsdale med spa ranks well. Why doesn't AI name my practice?

A ranking report measures where a Scottsdale med spa's pages sit for chosen keywords, while an AI answer is a short list of names, 6.4 practices on average in 234 Scottsdale answers measured September 16, 2026. Microsoft states that SEO does not guarantee rankings or traffic and that generative engine optimization does not guarantee citations in AI experiences, and OpenAI says ChatGPT placement is not guaranteed.

Neither report is wrong. A keyword report can be accurate about Google and still say nothing about what ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok or Perplexity tell a Scottsdale patient. For Botox in Scottsdale, those five assistants put thirteen different practice names into their fifteen top-three places, and no single practice made all five lists.

A ranking report tracks one list. The Scottsdale AI answers were five lists that barely overlapped, which no keyword position can forecast.

What websites does AI read before it names a Scottsdale med spa?

AI answers about Scottsdale med spas cite directories, review sites and practices' own websites. In 234 AI answers about Scottsdale med spas, measured September 16, 2026, 134 cited at least one website, led by yelp.com in 53 answers, medspascout.com in 37, discovermedspa.com in 32 and realself.com in 31, with adamandevemedspa.com the practice website cited most often, in 26.

yelp.com appeared among the sites cited for every treatment we measured in Scottsdale: in 10 body contouring answers, 5 Botox answers, 6 lip filler answers, 6 Morpheus8 answers and 6 weight loss answers. realself.com led the body contouring citations with 13. A Scottsdale practice's listings on those sites are part of what the assistants read, and SEO work on the practice's own website does not reach them.

The practice's own treatment pages are read too, which is where the SEO already being paid for can help. The full breakdown is on our Scottsdale page.

Is my SEO provider doing something wrong if AI does not mention my Scottsdale med spa?

Not necessarily. An SEO provider can do sound work on Google rankings while a few checkable settings still keep AI assistants from reading a Scottsdale med spa's site, and those settings are often outside a monthly ranking report. In Scottsdale, 134 of 234 AI answers cited a website, so whether the assistants can read the practice's site is worth asking about directly.

For Google's own AI features, the SEO work already carries over. Google says there are no special requirements for AI Overviews beyond a page being indexed and eligible for a snippet. The questions below are mostly about the other assistants, which use their own crawlers.

What should I ask my SEO provider about AI crawlers?

Ask the SEO provider whether the Scottsdale med spa's robots.txt file and its host or content delivery network allow OAI-SearchBot for ChatGPT, Claude-SearchBot and Claude-User for Claude, and PerplexityBot for Perplexity. OpenAI says sites that block OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, and for semaglutide in Scottsdale, the websites of all three practices ChatGPT named most often were among the sites cited.

Is OAI-SearchBot allowed at the CDN as well as in robots.txt? OpenAI's help page says to confirm that the website host or content delivery network allows traffic from OpenAI's published searchbot IP addresses. A bot-protection setting can refuse a crawler that robots.txt allows.

Are Claude-SearchBot, Claude-User and PerplexityBot allowed? Anthropic says blocking Claude-SearchBot may reduce a site's visibility in Claude's search results, and Perplexity recommends allowing PerplexityBot and its published IP ranges.

Did we block GPTBot or ClaudeBot on purpose? Those are training crawlers, and OpenAI treats search and training as independent settings. Blocking them is a legitimate choice, but it should be a decision someone made, and the search crawlers should not be caught in the same rule.

What should I ask my SEO provider about my Scottsdale treatment pages?

Ask whether every treatment the Scottsdale med spa offers has its own indexable page that answers a patient's question in plain visible text. In Scottsdale AI answers, practice websites were cited treatment by treatment, such as koraaesthetics.com in 11 lip filler answers, thebodify.com in 10 body contouring answers and scottsdalecenterforplasticsurgery.com in 8 Morpheus8 answers.

Does each treatment have its own page? A single services page that lists Botox, lip filler and Morpheus8 in one grid gives an assistant little to quote about any one of them. The Scottsdale answers for each treatment are on their own pages: lip filler, body contouring, Morpheus8 and weight loss (GLP-1).

Does each page say who performs the treatment, that the practice is in Scottsdale, and what the patient should expect, in text rather than images? Bing says pages are more likely to be selected for grounding and citations when the content stands on its own, with facts stated explicitly.

Does our structured data match what the page says, and is anything hiding the snippet? Google lists matching structured data to visible text among its fundamentals, and names nosnippet, max-snippet and noindex as the controls that limit what its AI features show.

How will I know whether AI answers about my Scottsdale med spa have changed?

The direct way to know is to ask the same Scottsdale patient questions again, in the same assistants, and compare who is named against the Scottsdale treatment pages. ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to its referral links, so clicks from ChatGPT search show in analytics, though those count visits, not mentions.

A monthly ranking report and a periodic check of Scottsdale AI answers measure different things, and an owner who wants to know about both needs both.

Questions owners ask

Does ranking on the first page of Google mean AI will recommend my Scottsdale med spa?

No. Microsoft states that SEO does not guarantee citations in AI experiences, and OpenAI says ChatGPT placement is not guaranteed. In Scottsdale, each assistant named a different top three for every treatment, so there was no single list a ranking could match.

Should I block GPTBot and ClaudeBot from my Scottsdale med spa website?

GPTBot and ClaudeBot collect training data, and OpenAI says its search crawler and training crawler are independent settings. A Scottsdale med spa can block the training crawlers and still allow OAI-SearchBot and Claude-SearchBot, which are the ones tied to search.

Do Yelp and RealSelf matter for AI answers about Scottsdale med spas?

In 234 AI answers about Scottsdale med spas, measured September 16, 2026, yelp.com was cited in 53 answers and realself.com in 31. That shows the assistants read those sites; it does not show that a listing there causes a Scottsdale practice to be named.
